Beginning to Understand Narcissus
When Narcissus was born, his parents asked the Prophet Tires whether their son would live long. He replied that he would, if he never sees his image/reflection. As a boy, Narcissus was so handsome that he had a bunch of fans. However, legend has it that he was so proud and icy hearted, that he despised all love. Nymph Echo was withdrawn in solitude because of unrequited love where she was fading away until only her voice has left. Finally, one of rejected Narcissus fans cursed him to fall in love with something that will be unattainable to him. Nemesis, the goddess of revenge has granted the curse of the fan and punished Narcissus who was then sixteen years old.
One day, tired of hunting, Narcissus went to a spring to quench his thirst. Then and there his own image in the reflection of the water mirror and he was mesmerized by the beauty he saw. So, he fell in love with himself. In vain he tried to hug and kiss that elusive image, that smiled and cried along with him. He completely forgot about food and sleep and finally, exhausted, he died there on the grass beside the spring. At the time of his death the nymph Echo was the only one who saw him and sent him the last farewell. When Dryads, Echo and other nymphs came to bury him crying, they saw a beautiful flower near the spring with white coronal petals. The legend also has it that Narcissus is still watching his reflection in the underworld, in the Stygian waters. Well, after seeing these pictures for the first time I think that I began trying to understand Narcissus. Water is the best mirror where nature gets to see its reflection.
